During Colder Months Older Adults Require Special Skin Care

Many older people suffer from dry spots on their skin, often on their lower legs, elbows, and lower arms. It is even more crucial to pay attention to those spots during the colder months. Establishing and maintaining a comprehensive skincare regimen is vital for healing and avoiding dry skin.
1. Ointments and creams will be more effective than lotions. Also, make sure that you choose a fragrance-free product. As moisturizers work by trapping existing moisture in the skin, apply the moisturizer immediately after bathing and washing hands to maximize the effects.
2. Long, hot showers can further damage dry skin; therefore, limit showers (and baths) to 5-10 minutes and use warm, rather than hot, water.
3. When possible, run a humidifier to add moisture to the air in the home.
